About Musanyi Foundation

Advancing Conservation, Science and Sustainable Livelihoods

Musanyi Foundation is a purpose-driven organization committed to protecting aquatic biodiversity, advancing scientific knowledge, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through innovative aquaculture and conservation solutions.

Led by Dr. David Manguya Lusega by the help of multidisciplinary research team comprising of Jonathan Masava PhD reseacher on MF Blue gold cichilds at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology,Fish Genomics Research at University of Eldoret by Finnan Agengo,Mr Victor Okong’o Environmental Social Engineer,FCPA ,Brown Amiani, Prof Paul Odwori -Economist University Of Eldoret ,Dr.Eng Mulindi Bio systems engineer from University of Eldoret,Mr Lameck Menya Msc reseacher from the University of Eldoret,DrJohn Gitau from Blue Economy consultant ministry of Blue economy,Mrs Roselinda Uluma Naima MSc Musanyi Blue Gold cichilds the Foundation seeks to bridge the gap between scientific research, conservation, sustainable aquaculture, and economic opportunity.

Our work is rooted in the belief that Africa’s aquatic biodiversity is not only a natural heritage that must be protected, but also a valuable resource that can support communities, create green jobs, strengthen scientific capacity, and contribute to sustainable economic development.

Musanyi Foundation is a purpose-driven organization committed to protecting aquatic biodiversity, advancing scientific knowledge, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through innovative aquaculture and conservation solutions.

Led by Dr. David Manguya Lusega, a lecturer in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Foundation seeks to bridge the gap between scientific research, conservation, sustainable aquaculture, and economic opportunity.

Our work is rooted in the belief that Africa’s aquatic biodiversity is not only a natural heritage that must be protected, but also a valuable resource that can support communities, create green jobs, strengthen scientific capacity, and contribute to sustainable economic development.

Lake Victoria’s hsplochromines cichlids represent one of the world’s most remarkable examples of freshwater fish biodiversity. Their ecological, scientific, cultural, and economic value makes their conservation a priority.

Yet many species have experienced dramatic population declines, with some becoming endangered or disappearing from the wild.

At the same time, the global ornamental fish industry represents a significant economic opportunity. Kenya possesses exceptional freshwater biodiversity, but there is still a need for stronger infrastructure, scientific breeding capacity, ethical commercialization, and conservation-focused aquaculture.

The Blue Gold Project aims to help bridge this gap.

Rather than harvesting vulnerable species from the wild, the project seeks to develop controlled, scientifically managed breeding systems that can support conservation while creating responsible economic opportunities.

Musanyi Foundation is pursuing an integrated solar-powered Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) model that allows fish to be bred and maintained in controlled environments while minimizing water consumption and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

The project brings together:

  • Conservation – Supporting the recovery and preservation of threatened Lake Victoria cichlid species through controlled scientific breeding.
  • Science & Research – Generating knowledge on breeding, genetics, nutrition, fish health, water quality, and aquaculture technologies.
  • Sustainable Aquaculture – Demonstrating environmentally responsible fish production using modern RAS technology.
  • Renewable Energy – Integrating solar power to support sustainable and energy-efficient aquaculture systems.
  • Livelihoods – Creating opportunities for youth, local communities, researchers, technicians, and entrepreneurs.
  • Ethical Trade – Developing responsible pathways for the production and potential export of captive-bred ornamental fish.
  • Ecosystem Restoration – Contributing to the long-term restoration and protection of Lake Victoria’s aquatic biodiversity.
01. Conservation

We seek to protect threatened Lake Victoria cichlids by developing scientifically managed captive-breeding and conservation programs.

02. Science

We promote research, innovation, data collection, and knowledge-sharing to improve understanding of cichlid biology and sustainable aquaculture.

03. Livelihoods

We aim to turn conservation into opportunity by creating green jobs, training opportunities, and sustainable enterprises around aquaculture and biodiversity.

04. Trade

We envision a future where Kenya can participate more strongly in the ethical ornamental fish industry through scientifically bred, captive-produced fish rather than unsustainable wild harvesting.

05. Restoration

We are committed to supporting the long-term restoration of aquatic ecosystems and strengthening awareness of the value of Lake Victoria’s unique biodiversity.
